Step Out of Business-as-Usual
What more is possible?
Our current economic paradigm isn’t working. It extracts from and oppresses us, deepening inequalities. Although we’ve been told “this is just the way things are,” I have seen there are potent alternatives to “business-as-usual” through a decade of practice and research.
As a small-business leader, I know the economy isn’t a grandiose untouchable machine. Rather, it is made up of each of us—individuals, businesses, and organizations—and our symphony of everyday, ethical choices.
If we want an economy that works better for all of us, we have a responsibility to stop replicating the business-as-usual that harms us. By changing how we interact with one another and run our businesses and organizations, we create pathways out of what isn’t working and into liberatory futures.
The current paradigm restricts our imagination, sometimes leaving us to feel the only path is one in which we partake in what ails us. But there are other ways. I’ve spent my career at the leading edge of alternative economics and, I can assure you, the “forbidden fruits” of business-out-of-the-ordinary are worth tasting!
I support groups and individuals to boldly step into alternatives.
There are possible futures of liberation, abundance, and repair awaiting us if we can stretch ourselves to imagine their details.

To build a better future, we must first imagine it.
We need stories to show us the light ahead.
Co-produced by Beloved Economies and Avalon: Story, The Light Ahead podcast creatively explores: What would 2030 be like if the U.S. had an economy that truly worked and cared for everyone?
Seen through the lens of pop culture, the future is looking pretty dystopian: Black Mirror, Westworld, The 100, 3%, and a myriad other shows, movies, and books imagine what will happen if the darkest aspects of humanity win out. The Light Ahead looks in the opposite direction. What would society look like if we actually manage to get things right?
Each episode is a scripted piece of short fiction set in 2030 and informed by the visions of activists and justice advocates.
